Pre-wedding shoot locations in Udupi and Manipal
We’ve already written a state-wide guide to pre-wedding shoot locations in Karnataka, covering the coast, the hills, and Bangalore’s gardens in one sweep. This post goes narrower: just Udupi and Manipal, the two towns we shoot most often because we’re based here, and the specific spots within them that actually earn a place on a shot list.
Malpe: the working coastline
Malpe is Udupi’s most established stretch of coast, and its character comes from being a working harbour town rather than a manicured resort front. Fishing boats, the harbour itself, and a wide beach give a pre-wedding session texture that a purely decorative beach can’t match — useful for couples who want the sea in their gallery without it looking staged. Morning here has activity in the frame if you want it; the same stretch by evening, once the boats are in, gives you open sand and long shadows.
Kaup and the lighthouse coast
South of Malpe, the Kaup stretch is quieter and, in our experience, more reliably photogenic for a couple who wants the coast without a crowd in the background. The Kapu lighthouse area gives a strong architectural anchor if you want one clean, graphic element in the frame alongside the couple, rather than open horizon on all sides. We shoot this stretch often for venues along it as well as for standalone pre-wedding sessions, and the light behaves the same way for both: hard and flat by mid-morning, soft and workable again in the hour before sunset.
Krishna Matha and the temple-town lanes
Udupi town itself, around Krishna Matha, gives a completely different register from the coast — narrow lanes, older architecture, and a slower, more textured backdrop for couples who want something closer to their families’ everyday Udupi than a beach holiday. We treat this as a walking session rather than a fixed-spot shoot: a short sequence through the lanes near the temple, timed for the softer light of early morning before the town properly wakes up, works better than trying to stage a single hero shot in the middle of a busy street.
Manipal’s campus lines
Manipal, a short drive inland from Udupi, offers something the coast and the temple town don’t: clean, contemporary architectural lines. The university town’s campus buildings, wide walkways, and modern landscaping give a more editorial, less traditional look, which suits couples who want at least part of their gallery to feel current rather than heritage. We usually pair a Manipal set with a coastal one in the same day when a couple wants both registers in their final gallery — the contrast between the two locations does more work than either alone.
Choosing between them
There’s no single right answer here, and we’d rather talk a couple through the choice than push a default. If your gallery’s job is to sit next to wedding photographs from a Udupi coastal venue, shooting the pre-wedding session on that same coast — Malpe or Kaup — builds a visual thread between the two sets that a couple notices later, even if they can’t quite say why the two galleries feel like they belong together. If you want something that reads more independently from the wedding day itself, Manipal’s campus architecture or the Krishna Matha lanes give you that distance.
Timing, in practice
As with any pre-wedding shoot in this region, we build the schedule around light rather than convenience. A full session across two of these locations — say, Kaup at sunrise and Manipal by mid-morning, or the temple lanes early and the coast at golden hour — needs the better part of a day once you account for the drive between them and outfit changes. Trying to compress two very different locations into a rushed afternoon usually costs you the best light at one of them.
Planning your Udupi or Manipal shoot
We shoot across Udupi and Manipal regularly enough to know which hour turns each of these spots from decent to genuinely good, and it isn’t always the hour couples assume. If you’re also considering Mangalore for part of your session, our companion guide to pre-wedding shoot locations in Mangalore covers that coast’s own set of options. For your wedding itself, see how we work across Udupi, and check your date when you’re ready to plan the shoot.
