Some of our most consistently well-lit portrait sessions have come from overcast, pre-rain afternoons.

Coastal venues around Udupi, Kundapura, and Mangalore take on a different character entirely once the rains arrive — the Arabian Sea turns dramatic, greens deepen across the coastline, and a wedding photographed against a moody, storm-lit horizon has a cinematic quality that a clear dry-season sky simply can’t replicate. It won’t suit every couple’s vision, but for those drawn to atmosphere over postcard blue skies, monsoon coastal weddings are quietly some of the most striking we shoot.

Planning around the rain, not despite it

Build a covered contingency into every outdoor plan. Any monsoon wedding needs a genuine indoor or covered backup for the ceremony itself, confirmed with the venue in writing, not assumed.

Shift the golden-hour portrait session earlier. Cloud cover means the flattering light window runs longer through the day, so portraits aren’t as tightly bound to a thirty-minute sunset slot — useful if your timeline is already tight with rituals.

Talk to your film team about audio. Rain on a tent roof can overwhelm ceremony audio for a wedding film. A good videographer plans microphone placement specifically for this, rather than discovering the problem in the edit.
